  2.                  SOUND BLASTER PRO  LATEST INFORMATION

  5. 1.  INSTALLATION
  6.  
  7. A hard disk is required for Sound Blaster Pro software installation.
  8. The installation  is  done by  executing the  hard disk installation
  9. program,  INST-HD.EXE found  on the diskette labeled  "Sound Blaster
  10. Pro Disk #1". The files on the distribution diskettes are compressed.
  11. INST-HD.EXE and LHARC.EXE will expand them into your hard disk.
  12.  
  13. INST-HD.EXE  installs  the  Sound  Blaster Pro  software  under  the
  14. directory, \SBPRO.  Several subdirectories are automatically created
  15. under this directory.
  16.  
  17. To begin the installation, follow these steps:
  18.  
  19. (Assuming you are using floppy drive A and hard disk drive C)
  20.  
  21.         1.  Place  the distribution diskette labeled  "Sound Blaster
  22.             Pro Disk #1" in Drive A and change to Drive A:
  23.  
  24.         2.  Type INST-HD C: and press Enter.
  25.  
  26.  
  27. If  you decide  to expand  the  files  manually,  run the  LHARC.EXE
  28. program  (found on the "Sound Blaster Pro Disk #1" disk) on any .LZH
  29. file. For example, to expand INST-DRV.EXE from the  PROGRAM.LZH file
  30. on Drive A, type:
  31.  
  32.         LHARC x A:PROGRAM.LZH INST-DRV.EXE
  33.  
  34. This places INST-DRV.EXE onto the current drive or directory (assumes
  35. LHARC.EXE is already in the current drive or directory).
  36.  
  37. INST-HD.EXE automatically inserts the  SOUND and  BLASTER environment
  38. settings into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  43. 2.  PACKAGE CONTENTS

  45. The Sound Blaster Pro software package contains:

  47.     -  one 5.25"  1.2MB diskettes
  48.             - Sound Blaster Pro Disk #1
  49.     -  one 5.25"  360KB diskettes
  50.             - Sound Blaster Pro Disk #2

  52.     -  one 3.5"  1.44MB diskettes
  53.             - Sound Blaster Pro Disk #1

  55. The 3.5" diskette contains the same software as the two 5.25"

  151. 3. SET SOUND BLASTER PRO VOLUME
  152.  
  153. A batch file, SETVOL.BAT  located on the \SBPRO directory is provided
  154. to set the volume level of the Sound Blaster Pro. Run this batch file
  155. to ensure that your Sound Blaster Pro volume is set to mid range.

  159. 4. SBSIM SUPPORT FOR MIDI
  160.  
  161. SBSIM (SB Simplified Interface Module) has now been updated to include
  162. support for the MIDI driver SBMIDI. To make use of the MIDI support,
  163. include a new section titled [MIDI] in your configuration file. The
  164. available keywords, and their default values, are as follows:
  165.  
  166.     [Midi]
  167.         BufferSize=32           ; Specifies the size of the buffer
  168.                                 ;   to allocate for MIDI files, in
  169.                                 ;   Kbytes
  170.         MidiMap=0               ; Specifies the type of MIDI file
  171.                                 ;   to be played:
  172.                                 ;       0 = General MIDI files
  173.                                 ;       1 = Basic MIDI files
  174.                                 ;       2 = Extended MIDI files
  175.                                 ;   Note that types 1 and 2 are as
  176.                                 ;   defined in Multimedia Windows.

  178. Note that you need to load SBMIDI (the Sound Blaster MIDI driver)
  179. before you invoke SBSIM.

  182. The  Music player program, MUSIC.EXE, has also been updated  to play
  183. MIDI  files.  The command set is the same, except that the  commands
  184. /REPEAT, /TEMPO, /TRANSPOSE and /WAIT are not available when playing
  185. MIDI files. Also, a new command is implemented to allow switching of
  186. MIDI modes.

  188. The resulting command set of MUSIC.EXE is as follows:

  211. 5. MIDI FILES
  212.  
  213.    The  MIDI files in the subdirectory \MIDI are to be played with
  214.    JUKEBOX for  WINDOWS 3.0 only. These files do not comply to the
  215.    guidelines  of creating MIDI files for the Multimedia PC.
  216.  
  217.    The same MIDI files found in the subdirectory \PLAYMIDI are created
  218.    to  support the MIDI MAPPER and they comply fully to the Multimedia
  219.    PC rules. When you use JUKEBOX in WINDOWS to play these files, make
  220.    sure that your MIDI MAPPER is set to either the SBP2 EXT FM or SBP2
  221.    BASIC  FM.  Using it with SBP2 ALL FM will cause the song to  sound
  222.    "cluttered".

  224.    For the PLAYMIDI.EXE program, you have to use the /FMT switch when
  225.    you play these MIDI files. For example:
  226.  
  227.        PLAYMIDI   Midifile  /FMT:Extended
  228.    or  PLAYMIDI   Midifile  /FMT:Basic.

  231.    Refer to the manual for more information on MIDI file format and
  232.    MIDI Mapper.

  235. 6. Upgrading of Sound Blaster Mixer for Windows 3.0
  236.  
  237.    We  have  upgraded the mixer (SBMIXER.EXE) described in  chapter 9
  238.    (Windows 3.0 Applications) of the Sound Blaster Pro User Reference
  239.    Manual.
  240.  
  241.    This  mixer  supports  stereo  volume control and  is  renamed  as
  242.    SBPMIX30.EXE.  Its  documentation is the same as that of the mixer
  243.    for Windows 3.1 which can be found in the Windows 3.1 User's Guide
  244.    For Sound Blaster Pro.
